Our cowhide rugs are sourced from regulated tanneries where tanning and dyeing methods are safe for workers and non-pollutant. Every hide is a by-product of the meat industry — no animal is raised solely for its hide.
We work exclusively with tanneries that meet strict environmental and worker safety standards, and select only premium quality hides. Ethically made, designed to last a lifetime.
Several things set Art Hide apart from standard cowhide rugs.
- Fifth-generation artisan expertise combined with proprietary laser-burning and stitchless Fusion techniques
- 250 proprietary colours including distinctive metallics and the ability to match any Pantone shade
- Bespoke, made-to-order — each rug is crafted specifically for you with personalised service throughout
- Premium hide selection — we source only the finest hides for superior texture and durability
- Unique natural patterning enhanced by our artisan techniques, making every piece one of a kind
Cowhide rugs are surprisingly low maintenance. Here's what we recommend:
- Vacuum in the direction of the hair to prevent shedding
- Dust outside with a gentle shake or carpet beater
- Brush gently in the direction of the hide
For spills — a damp cloth with mildly soapy warm water works well. Stubborn stains respond to a water and white vinegar solution. Most spills simply wipe clean from the natural hide.
Placement — keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoid humid areas, and rotate semi-regularly in high-traffic spaces for even wear.
Cowhide is one of the most durable natural floor coverings available. Art Hide rugs are built to withstand years of daily foot traffic while maintaining their colour and texture — and they're a genuinely practical choice for homes with pets.
For heavy-traffic areas, rotating your rug periodically ensures even wear distribution over time.
Art Hide rugs are designed and crafted to minimise shedding. Our premium tanning and finishing processes ensure the hair remains securely attached to the hide. Following our cleaning and maintenance guidance above will help keep your rug in excellent condition long-term.
Customisation is at the heart of what we do. Art Hide specialises in bespoke, made-to-order rugs with:

- Unique designs — work with our artisan team to create one-of-a-kind patterns
- Any shape and size — tailored to your specific space

Not strictly necessary — cowhide has a natural weight and texture that helps it sit well on most surfaces. That said, a rug pad can offer added benefits: enhanced grip on smooth floors, extra cushioning, floor protection, and reduced movement over time.
Whether you need one depends on your flooring type and how the rug is used. Our team can advise during the consultation process.
